Moving a Refrigerator? Big Muscles Wanted (But Not Needed)

!±8± Moving a Refrigerator? Big Muscles Wanted (But Not Needed)

When it comes to moving a heavy item such as a refrigerator, big muscles are not a necessity (although big muscles do help). When it comes to moving heavy items such as a refrigerator, a big brain is more valuable. Grab some moving tools and let's think our way though this one.

First let's gather all the tools that will be needed for the job (duct tape, shoulder straps, appliance dolly). Now that you have all tools that's needed, you will a good plan. Go grab a sheet of notebook paper, and a pen so that you can take detailed notes. You will want to write down the dimensions of the fridge, and the height and width of any doors the fridge must pass through. Will the refrigerator need to pass through any tight hallways? Measure the width and height of the hallways, and be sure to write these numbers down.

Next use your duct tape (best invention since the wheel) to secure both refrigerator doors closed. A swinging refrigerator door can be a menace so add enough tape to keep doors closed. The bulkiness of a refrigerator makes them hard to maneuver so a good set of moving straps will allow you to maneuver more easily around corners. Being a professional mover in the Knoxville area, I've learned that moving tools (straps, dollies, etc..) will make any moving job easier.

You can use the forearm forklift or a more heavy duty shoulder strap for heavier refrigerators. Shoulder straps will not make a fridge feel lighter, that's not the purpose, the purpose is to put the dangerous weight on the shoulders (NOT THE BACK!). After placing the straps on, you and your moving partner needs to slowly lift the fridge while keeping good communication clear.

Walking slowly to the predetermined destination--rushing can lead to a twisted back or a broken leg. When you get to the destination, lower the fridge. If you're taking the refrigerator to a moving truck, it should be one of the first items loaded. Now that the refrigerator is safely at its predetermined destination, grab a cold glass of ice tea, high five your partner, and take a much needed break.
